Allan Munck is an engineer, researcher and hobby artist.
I have been painting and drawing since the late 1990s. I have learned the trade from many excellent teachers. Also I love to experiment and try alternative techniques. I have therefore sampled a large collection of techniques for painting and drawing. I have also acquired a great knowledge of materials for making paintings.
I have been thinking a low about optimal methods and I have made many experiments. These experiments and studies have given me great knowledge of the theoretical aspects of the trade.
However, over the years I have actually made only a few finished paintings and drawings. When I look back on my old paintings I must admit that I was never as skilled as I would like to be. I had a major gap between ambition and ability. I simply painted too seldom to develop the skills required to paint beautiful paintings.
The big gap between ambition and ability was highly demotivating. A new approach was needed to overcome this problem. So, lately I defined a new overall goal for my hobby:
Each day I will make at least 1 painting and 3 drawings.
This goal will be very difficult to achieve. Previously, I worked on a painting for a long time to get the result I aimed for. This will not be possible with my new goal. So my new paintings will be much more sketchy than I would have allowed earlier. And the subject matter will also be much more varied.
For my drawings, I will aim for a very different style than I used to have. Instead of doing detailed semi-realistic drawings, I intend to make more spontaneous sketches. Picasso is claimed to have said that it took him a lifetime to learn to draw like a child. This is also what I aim for. But I hope to do it a little faster, though.
I will use this website to share my progress. I do not claim to be an accomplished artist. Nevertheless, I hope that the information shared on this website can be helpful for other evolving artists.
